Consistency in terminology, italicization, capital letters etc

It's very important that writers don't shift back and forth between conventions or styles, and that they stick to their guns. Little things like making sure you don't constantly jump from acronyms to full names and back might not seem particularly important, but they all contribute to the overall effect of a piece of writing.
